THE MAP OF RETURN

Anca Maftei on inherited patterns, conscious choice and finding your way home

What if the life you are trying to create begins not with becoming someone new, but with understanding who you have always been beneath the patterns, expectations and identities you have learned to carry?

For Anca Maftei, this is the question at the heart of her work. As the creator of I AM Method — The Map of Return, a constellation facilitator and channeler, she has spent more than two decades exploring the relationship between personal history, spirituality, identity and the choices that shape our lives.

Her journey, she says, began in troubled waters. What followed was a deeply personal search for understanding: years of study, prayer, inner work and exploration, guided by a conviction that there was light within her, as she believes there is within every human being.

“I trusted the light before I knew how to live in it,” she reflects.

Over time, that search became something she could share. Today, the work she developed has reached thousands of people through her programmes in Romania, with more than 4,000 participants having taken part in her premium experiences. What began as a personal journey has evolved into an approach designed to help others explore the patterns they repeat, reconnect with their own sense of truth and make more conscious choices.

At its centre is a deceptively simple idea: you are not your patterns.

THE PATTERNS WE INHERIT

Much of what shapes our adult lives begins long before we are aware of it. The ways we seek approval, respond to conflict, approach relationships or make decisions can be influenced by the families and environments in which we grew up.

For Anca, understanding these influences is not about assigning blame or becoming defined by the past. It is about recognising what has been carried forward — and discovering that belonging does not have to mean repetition.

“You can honour your family without repeating its suffering,” is one of the central ideas behind her work.

Through constellation work, Anca creates a space in which aspects of a person’s inner world can be explored using people or objects as representatives. An intention provides the starting point: what does someone long to bring into their life, and what might be happening when they move towards it?

The exploration may include family relationships, earlier aspects of the self, a fear, a desire or a quality someone wishes to embody. Within I AM Method, constellation work and channeling form part of a wider spiritual process of examining belonging, identity and choice.

The invitation is not to treat every difficulty as something that needs fixing. It is to become curious about what a familiar pattern may be protecting.

A tendency to seek approval, for example, might raise a different question when met with compassion rather than judgement: What am I afraid would happen if I stopped? What am I trying to preserve? And what might become possible if I responded differently?

That moment of recognition can create room for a new decision.

I AM

Anca describes the I AM Method as a map — a way of exploring the journey from the roots of our experience towards a more conscious expression of who we are.

She uses the image of a tree to illustrate its unfolding.

The roots and stem represent ancestry, family loyalties, parents and childhood: the ground from which familiar ways of being have grown. The branches and leaves bring attention to the body and emotions, and the ways earlier experiences may still be felt in the present.

The flower represents the aspects of ourselves shaped around protection and belonging. Here, the invitation is to meet those parts with compassion, making room for release and a different way of being.

At the heart of the map is the sun: the essential self, expressed through the words “I AM”, and what Anca describes as our relationship with God. This is the spiritual centre of her approach.

Finally come the fruits and the forest — the choices, relationships, work and contributions through which inner understanding becomes part of everyday life.

It is an image that brings the philosophy back to something practical. A new understanding matters not only because of what we realise about ourselves, but because of what we choose to do with that realisation.

FROM INNER UNDERSTANDING TO EVERYDAY LIFE

For Anca, spirituality is not separate from the ordinary details of being human. It becomes visible in the way we communicate, the boundaries we establish, the responsibility we take and the choices we make when approval or familiarity pulls us in another direction.

Her own life has continued to shape that understanding. Following the separation from her former husband, she found herself entering a different relationship with herself. Having spent much of her life directing her attention towards other people and their needs, she began making more deliberate space for her own wellbeing, joy, prayer and personal development.

It was not one dramatic decision, but a series of everyday commitments — a gradual recognition that she, too, belonged within the circle of her own care.

“I learned to include myself in the love I had always given to others,” she says.

That distinction runs through her teaching. Change does not have to begin with rejection of the person you have been. It can begin with the willingness to understand yourself more honestly, and to choose from a different place.

Anca’s work has developed through more than 22 years of study and exploration across 26 schools and approaches to therapeutic practice, personal development and spirituality. ReGeneration was an important chapter in that evolution and received public recognition in Romania in 2024 and 2025. Today, I AM Method — The Map of Return is the central expression of the work she is taking forward.

Her ambition now is to bring that approach to a wider international audience through workshops, online programmes, writing and collaborations. She also hopes to develop an English-language podcast and bring The Map of Return into a book, creating more space for conversations about identity, inherited loyalties, belonging, love and our relationship with God.

But expansion, for her, is not simply about reaching more people. It is about preserving the depth of the work as its audience grows.

A DIFFERENT WAY FORWARD

There is a particular question Anca wants people to carry with them: how do we honour where we come from without allowing the past to decide how we live?

It is a question that speaks to the tension between belonging and individuality — the desire to remain connected to the people and experiences that shaped us, while allowing ourselves the freedom to make a life that feels genuinely our own.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of returning to ourselves is discovering that we do not have to choose between love and truth. We can acknowledge what shaped us without allowing it to determine every decision that follows. We can meet old patterns with compassion while taking responsibility for what happens next.

For Anca, manifestation is not simply about asking for a different future. It is the meeting of the soul’s longing, the courage to act and the grace of God. It is about listening to what calls us and giving it form through our choices, our work and our relationships.

“What wants to come alive through you?” she asks.

Beneath an ambition, there may be a gift waiting to be expressed. Beneath a familiar response, there may be another choice. And beneath the identities we have learned to inhabit, there may be a deeper sense of who we are.

The map, ultimately, is not about becoming someone else. It is about finding your way back to the part of yourself that was never lost.
